Advanced book about networks

Hi

I work as a network engineer and have done so for about two years. I have the Cisco CCNA as well as the Juniper JNCIA-JunOS and JNCIS-ENT certifications.

I bellieve I know a lot about computer networks / security, but would always like to learn something new. I think what I'm really looking for is a book about something like:

* Looking deeper into protocols - like TCP conversations
* Advanced network performance troubleshooting . like Spanning Tree and also TCP-related issues.

* Hacking - and protection a network from hackers.

Can you recommend me a good book about this? It doesn't have to be vendor specific. Just a general book would be neat.

JNCSP-SP / ENT review

Having that I could not find any reviews or structured opinions about these certifications I found myself eager to start a topic about this subject.

My background: 4.5 years in ISP support environment (where these certifications strongly apply)

JN0-690:

  • Recommended Training:

Junos Troubleshooting in the NOC (JTNOC)

  • What I did for this course:

Did not attend / check material

Went straight to the exam (check why on JN0-692)

  • Conclusion:

I enjoyed the structure of the exam, the questions were clear and concise however I felt disappointed by its depth. Bearing in mind that you are required to have a P level for the support track initiation, this exam looks like sending you back half-way between A and S levels. If evaluation goes from one that is simply not used to troubleshooting techniques (e.g.. Someone not pursuing the E level / not in support environments) the contents are more than appropriate.

JN0-692:

  • Recommended Training:

Advanced Junos Service Provider Troubleshooting (AJSPT)

  • What I did for this course:

Was fortunate enough to have this training taught by the contents' developer during a live training. Apart from being someone with a huge support background, you can actually see his personality allover the book. This experience lead me to skip the JTNOC contents with no hesitation. The depth of the material is definitely appropriate. The labs are comprehensive enough to lead you to required rapid resolution techniques and task break down.

Applied normal study techniques to provided books and recommended resources.

  • Conclusion:

The exam was a joyful challenge. I felt hard to coop with the required average times per question due to the fact that some exhibits were very extensive and screen resolution impacts your experience. The depth of these questions is exactly what you are expected to know if the study from recommended material is taken seriously. Very positive marks for both contents and question types.

JN0-694:

  • Recommended Training:

Advanced Junos Enterprise Routing Troubleshooting (AJERT)
Advanced Junos Enterprise Switching Troubleshooting (AJEXT)

  • What I did for this course:

Bought the materials from online store and applied normal study techniques to theory. Did not had the chance to experiment the live training but I cannot be left to think that it would be very useful to practice these materials. I was able to visualize mentioned examples since and only since I recently did the ENT bootcamp. I strongly suggest that you get to do the labs if you buy these training materials.

  • Conclusion:

The exam was different from JN0-692. Having the past experience I sat the exam bearing in mind to rush on short length type of questions in order to get more attention to long exhibits. The depth of the questions was more than appropriate. They are very straight to the point and could not ask for more. Felt this exam to be more relaxed but comprehensive and broader to bear all study topics.

Looking back at these three exams I cannot recommend them enough to anyone that either wishes to get her/himself certified in proper JUNOS troubleshooting techniques.

Furthermore I would also like to emphasize that the contents are definitely appropriate to get yourself motivated and definitely more experienced towards the E level for these tracks, if that is your final goal.

I would like to recommend Juniper Certification team to try to motivate / inform people to apply towards the JN0-690 exam after completing the S level and not only after the P level is achieved.

Look forward to hear your experiences.

Cheers!

If anyone from the Juniper Cert team is out there today, I need some help.

I totally brain farted and scheduled the JNCIP-ENT instead of the JNCIP-SP for tomorrow.  I don't need to take the JNCIP-ENT til 2015.

I tried to find a contact number for Pearson VUE to change the exam.  Is there anyone out there that can help?

Hi everyone,

I previously posted a job opening here, but we're having difficulty finding someone to fill it so we've changed the role a bit. So, here's our new job opening for a Juniper engineer in Basel, Switzerland;

This role is open to both permanent and contract candidates

We’re looking for a knowledgeable networking specialist to engage with the networking for our cloud and drive it forward.

In the short term, this means you’ll be getting stuck in with the build out of the cloud and working with our data centre’s NOC to implement our networking systems across our three data centres.

We’re looking for someone who, given a general goal such as “implement load balancing of customer traffic across two data centres”, can take ownership of the task and drive it through to completion independently.

In return we can promise that you’ll learn a lot and have ample opportunity and support to develop professionally both on the job and through training of your choice.

Responsibilities

  • Be the team guru for all things networking!
  • Implementation of fibre optic and copper networks across three data centres using Juniper and F5 hardware.
  • Implement performance, capacity, and availability monitoring for all our networks.
  • Test and maintain all of our networks to ensure security, stability, and performance.
  • Work with second and third level technical support from our software and hardware vendors when required.
  • Devise ways to automate implementation and configuration work using Puppet.
  • Maintain documentation for all the work you do.

Technical Skills
This is a “wish list” of skills and knowledge we’d like to see, and we’re open to considering applications even if you don’t have them all (yet!);

Most Important

  • Juniper or Cisco switches (JNCIE/CCIE level preferred)
  • Juniper or Cisco firewalls (JNCIE/CCIE level preferred)
  • F5 load balancers

Preferable

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6
  • KVM
  • Puppet

Personal Qualities

  • Fluent English (written and spoken) is required.
  • German language skills are a bonus.
  • Able to work independently without detailed direction.
  • Able to work well in a team environment.
  • Flexible and adaptable – willing to take on new challenges, even if they’re unexpected!

If anyone’s interested please drop me a line with your CV at chris.bingham@processlynx.ch and hr@processlynx.ch

Thanks,

Chris

Hello,

I have heard some information that the JNCIS-ENT exams have recently (~March) changed. Is this true?

If so, how does it affect the study that I've already done in preparation for the exam?

Thanks in advance.

Hello All,

I was wondering if anyone has purchased a workbook from Proteus Press in 2014.

The contact number on the website puts me through to Fishnet and then I was on hold for 15 minutes trying to get through to Proteus Press before I hung up.

I do not want to make the purchase and then spend weeks trying to claim the money back if the workbook is no longer for sale.

Any help would be grateful.

If not then onto to Inet Zero.

Good luck in the chase :)

Advice and environments: ENT vs. SP

$

I'm looking for some generic advice on choosing enterprise vs. service provider tracks. I've been discussing these tracks, and these environments with different folks I work with. This is what I've heard: while service provider environments have more interesting tech (MPLS, VPLS, big scale, big problems), they are typically very siloed engineering environments. While enterprise environments don't have as much of that aforementioned interesting tech, they offer more opportunity for an engineer to work on a more broad range of areas. Currently I work in an enterprise environment and have access to that broad range of work. I've never worked for a service provider.

Whatever I choose, I want go to JNCIE for that track. I really like topics on the SP track even just from an academic standpoint. Do you guys think it would be a waste of time to go SP when most of what I'm doing is ENT? I realize it's more work. I'd definitely like to keep the door open to work in an SP environment if the right opportunity became available but I like the broad exposure I currently get from working in medium to large ENT environments.
